Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

Why can ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water but not as a solid?

A

When dissolved in water, ions are free to move around and carry a charge, while as a solid are in fixed positions

Q

Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?

A

Giant ionic lattices held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction. These forces take lots of energy to overcome

Q

Why do ionic compounds dissolve in water?

A

Water molecules are polar. The permanent dipoles in water pull apart ions in the lattice structure.

Q

What is a dative covalent bond?

A

A bond that forms when a bonding pair is created, but the electron pair is only supplied by one atom as a lone pair of electrons.
