Bonding Flashcards
Polar Bonds
Unequal sharing of electrons between atoms in a molecule. Results in a charge separation
Bond polarity
Atoms of different electro negativity bond with each other
nonpolar bond
electrons are shared equally between atoms, Diff in electro negativity is less than 0.4
Polar bond electronegativity
Between 0.4 and 1.9
Molecular polarity
Arises when a molecule is asymmetric. Polar molecule will have a partial positive and partial negative charge. Results in a net dipole molecule
Localized model
shared electrons are assumed to be dedicated to the atoms sharing the bond; shared electrons occupy localized bond orbitals
Which is stronger sigma or pi bonds?
Sigma because the electron pair is shred in an area centered on a line running between the atoms
Pi bonds
forms double and triple bonds by sharing electron pairs in the space above and below the sigma bond
Can single bonds be pi bonds?
No! They are always sigma.
