Body Systems Flashcards
What is digestion?
Digestion is the process of mechanically and enzymatically breaking down food into substances for absorption into the bloodstream.

Digestion
What is mechanical digestion?
Mechanical digestion involves physically breaking down food substances into smaller particles to more efficiently undergo chemical digestion.

What is chemical digestion?
Chemical digestion uses certain enzymes to break down nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, into smaller molecules.

What is respiration?
Respiration is a series of chemical reactions occurring inside cells.
What are the main organs in the human respiratory system?
The lungs, the trachea and the diaphragm.
How does the respiratory system work?
Breathing in, air enters the airways and travels down into the alveoli in the lungs. This is where gas exchange takes place.
List the components of the circulatory system.
The primary components in the circulatory system are the heart, the blood vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries.
What is the function of the heart?
The heart’s function is to pump blood around the body.
What is the function of the arteries?
The arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body.
What is the function of the veins?
Veins are blood vessels located throughout your body that collect oxygen-poor blood and return it to your heart.
What is the functions of the capillaries?
They transport blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in your organs and body systems.
What is the structure of the heart?
Four chambers: two upper chambers known as the left atrium and right atrium and two lower chambers called the left and right ventricles. It is also made up of four valves which connect the chambers.
