Excretory
Where: In the abdomen
Importance: the kidneys filter blood and produce urine the urine is stored in the bladder until it can be expelled (same thing as the urinary system)
Digestive
Where: Begins at the mouth ends at the anus
Importance: Breaks down food into absorbable units that enter the blood
Respiratory
Where: In the chest
Importance: Keeps blood supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide (gas exchange)
Circulatory
Where: Spanning the entire body
Importance: carry blood around the body ( nutrients and oxygen are in the blood)
Muscular
Where: On top of skeleton, also in organs
Importance: Body movement, maintains posture, produces heat (movement)
Skeletal
Where: Underneath the muscles
Importance: Protect and support soft tissue, attachment for muscles, blood cell formation (hematopoiesis), mineral storage
Nervous
Where: Main centers in the brain and spinal cord extends throughout the body
Importance: Central nervous system activates muscle and glands (effectors)
