body systems Flashcards
Level 1: Cell?
the smallest living unit found in all parts of the human body.
Level 2: Tissues?
Similar cells grouped together to do a specific job
Level 3: Organs?
Structures composed of several kinds of tissue
Level 4: Body Systems?
Groups of organs working together to perform complex functions
body system: 1. Circulatory / Cardiovascular System
function:
- Transports substance like oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), nutrients.
- Remove Waste throughout the body
organs: - Blood
- Heart
- Blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries)
body system: 2. Respiratory system
function:
- Moves air into and out of lungs
- controls gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between blood and lungs
organs: - Lungs, nose, mouth
- trachea
- Bronchi
body system: 3. Digestive system
function:
- Extracts and absorbs nutrients from food.
- removes wastes
- maintains water
- chemical balances
organs: - Mouth, Salivary glands, Esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, small and large intestine
body system: 4. Urinary (renal) system
function:
- removes wastes from blood
- regulates concentration of body fluids
organs: - kidneys, urinary bladder, ureters, urethra
body system: 5. Musculoskeletal system
function: BONES
- Skeleton supports and protects
organs
- Gives the body shape
- Allows movement
- Bone marrow makes new blood cells
function: MUSCLES
- Muscles allows for movement
organ:
- Skeletal Muscles; are found on bones and helps to move the body.
- Cardiac Muscles; make up the heart and help the heart to pump blood throughout the body.
- Smooth Muscles; are found in internal organs such as the esophagus and stomach.
body system: 6. Nerves system
function:
- Regulates behavior
- Maintains homeostasis
- Regulates other organ systems
- Controls sensory and motor functions
organs: Brain, spinal cord, nerves.
body system: 7. Endocrine system
function:
- Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands and travel through the blood.
- Hormones are involved in growth, development, metabolism.
- Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment. also regulating body temperature, blood glucose levels and water content.
organs:
- glands are organs that produce hormones.
