Body Planes & Movement Flashcards
On a cat’s limb, what is considered medial and why?
The inside of the limb
Because it is towards the midline
On a cat’s limb, what is considered lateral and why?
The outside of the limb
Because it is away from the midline
When talking about direction, what is considered ventral?
The belly/Underside
When talking about direction, what is considered dorsal?
The back
When talking about direction, what is considered cranial?
Towards the head
When talking about direction, what is considered caudal?
Towards the tail
When talking about direction, what is considered rostral?
The nose end of the head
When talking about direction, what is considered proximal?
Nearest to the midline (on limbs)
When talking about direction, what is considered distal?
Farthest to the midline (on limbs)
When talking about direction, what is considered palmar?
The front paws (manus), from the wrists (carpus)
When talking about direction, what is considered plantar?
The back paws (pes), from the ankles (tarsus) to the paws
When talking about direction, what is considered anterior?
Front of the body
When talking about direction, what is considered posterior?
Rear of the body
When talking about direction, what is considered superior?
Means above or towards the head (on bipeds)
When talking about direction, what is considered inferior?
Means below or towards the tail (on bipeds)
When talking about direction, what is considered superficial?
Near the surface
When talking about direction, what is considered deep?
Away from the surface (also known as internal)
What are planes?
Imaginary lines that are used to divide the body into sections
What is considered the midsagittal plane?
The plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves
(also known as median and midline)
What is considered the sagittal plane?
The plane that divides the body into unequal right and left parts
What is considered the dorsal plane?
The plane that divides the body into dorsal and ventral parts
What is considered the transverse plane?
The plane that divides the body into cranial and caudal parts
What is the medical term for “lying down”?
Recumbent
What does “dorsal recumbency” mean?
Lying on the back
What does “ventral recumbency” mean?
Lying on the belly
What does “left lateral recumbency” mean?
Lying on the left side
What does “right lateral recumbency” mean?
Lying on the right side
What does “adduction” mean?
To move towards the midline
What does “abduction” mean?
To move away from the midline
What does “flexion” mean?
Bending a joint
What does “extension” mean?
Straightening a joint
