Body Mechanics Flashcards
1
Q
fyi
- Some of the most common injuries sustained by healthcare workers are severe musculoskeletal strains
- Can be avoided by the conscious use of correct and proper body mechanics
A
fyi
2
Q
using body mechanics helps
A
The utilization of correct muscles to complete a task safely and efficiently without any undue strain on a muscle or a joint
3
Q
- Maintain a stable center of gravity
A
- Keep your center of gravity low
- Keep your back straight- with natural curves
- Bend at the knees-bring cog lower
- Bend at the hips- bring cog lower
4
Q
- Maintain a wide base of support
This will provide you with the maximum stability while lifting
A
- Keep your feet apart
- Place one foot slightly in front of the other
- Flex your knees
- Turn with your feet- baby steps
5
Q
- Maintain the line of gravity
This line should pass vertically through the base of support- #1
A
Keep your back straight
Keep the object being lifted close to your body
6
Q
- Maintain proper body alignment
A
- Tuck in your buttocks
- Pull your abdomen up and in-tighten core
- Keep your back from curving beyond it’s normal curvature
- Keep your head up
- Keep your chin up
- Keep your weight forward and supported on the outside of your feet
7
Q
Lifting techniques
we do a lot of lifting and teach pts
A
- Use the stronger leg muscles for lifting-use abs
- Bend at the knees and hips
- Keep your back straight
- Lift straight up, in one smooth motion
- Use momentum- rocking
8
Q
Reaching techniques
A
- Stand directly in front of, and close to the object- walk with vacuum
- Avoid twisting or stretching
- Use a stool or ladder for high objects- keep tight to body
- Maintain a good balance and a firm base of support
- Before moving the object, be sure it is not **too large or too heavy- test it **
9
Q
Pivoting techniques
A
- Place one foot slightly ahead of the other
- Turn both feet at the same time, pivoting on the heel of one foot and the toe of the other
- Maintain a good center of gravity while holding or carrying the object
10
Q
Avoid Stooping (bending at waist)
what are some techniques to use instead?
A
- Squat (bend at the hips and knees)
- Avoid stooping (bending at the waist)
- Use your leg muscles to return to an upright position
- Golfer’s lift example
11
Q
General Considerations
A
- It is easier to pull, push, or roll an object than it is to lift it
- Movements should be smooth and coordinated
- Not jerky
- Less energy or force is required to keep an object moving than it is to start and stop it
- Use the arm and leg muscles as much as possible, the back muscles as little as possible
- Keep the work as close as possible to your body
- It puts less of a strain on your back, legs, and arms
- Rock backward or forward on your feet to use your body weight as a pushing or pulling force (momentum)
- Keep the work at a comfortable height to avoid excessive bending at the waist
- Keep your body in good physical condition to reduce the chance of injury
12
Q
Use proper body mechanics in order to avoid the following
A
- Excessive fatigue- look for signs
- Muscle strains or tears
- Skeletal injuries
- Injuries to the patient
- Injury to assisting staff members
