When is a slide tube or hover mat used?

A

What is the difference in when to use a slide tube or hover mat?

A

Over 250 lbs- must use hover mat
under 250 lbs- can use hover must but must at least use a slide tube

How do you use a slide tub/hover mat?

A

it is put under the patient the same way as a draw sheet
the bed must be put to the highest level appropriate to protect nurses/aids

When do you use a gait belt?

A

always look at doctors orders first to make sure a patient can be out of bed
used to help patient ambulate or move to and from chairs/wheelchairs

How do you use a gait belt?

A

belt goes around a patients waist, right below the belly button and must fit with enough room to fit two fingers flat against the body
rock patient w a count of three into the standing postion
stand on the stronger side of patient with hand under belt at middle of back
if there are neurological issues present, stand on the weaker side of the body instead

Sara Steady

A

powered: if patient can stand and has arm strength
manual: can stand and balance for at least 10 seconds
Weight limit: 400 lbs

Hydraulic lift

A

if patient can sit on edge of bed with hands in their lap for 10 seconds they can use the Sara steady instead
patients sits in it like a chair with their hands in their lap to keep them safe

How to size a cane correctly

A

the elbow must be at about 15 degrees
if the fist is resting at the front and top of their thigh that’s about 15 degrees

How to size crutches properly

A

if the arm is straight down the hand hold on the crutches should be about even with their wrist (give you about a 15 degree angle in the elbow)
two fingers should also fit between the top of the crutch and the armpit to protect the artery and nerve
