Body Functions- Sensory Functions Flashcards
Visual- Quality
Ability to detect light, contrast, colour amongst visual stimuli.
Visual- Acuity
Detect objects, differentiate between them, discern details.
Visual- Stability
Perceive objects in environment as stable, even when eyes are moving.
Visual- Field
Detection of everything within visual field, object close or far away.
Hearing- Detection and Discrimination
Ability to detect noise and discriminate between pitch and volume of sound.
Hearing- Awareness of location
Being aware of location of sounds.
Hearing- Distance of sound
Aware of how far away sound is.
Hearing- Secure movement against gravity
Person moves their bodies in surrounding space against forces of gravity. Be aware of body position and maintain balance.
Taste
Quality of bitterness, sweetness, sour and saltiness.
Smell
Sensing odours, discrimination.
Proprioceptive- Position in Space
To be aware of the place of his/her body in space
Proprioceptive- Kinesthesia
Information from receptions in muscles/joints/tendons/ligaments, enables detection of the excursion and direction of joint movements.
Proprioceptive- Right/Left discrimination
Needing to know whether it is left is right.
Touch- Being touched
Perceive contact with the skin, object or with others.
Touch- Discriminate textures
Differentiate between various textures, tolerating textures.
Pain- Localised
Where potential/actual damage may occur in a part of the body (specific).
Pain- General
Pain that occurs in non-specific/large areas.
Temperature and Pressure- Thermal Awareness
Ability to sense heat and cold.
Temperature and Pressure- Force applied to skin
Force/pressure against the skin.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Visual-motor integration
Coordinating interaction of information from eyes and body during activity.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Spatial Relations
Determine position of objects relative to each other.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Spatial Operations
Mentally manipulating the position of objects in various relationships.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Visual Closure
Ability to fill in missing parts of a visual stimulus.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Figure Ground
Differentiating between background and foreground shapes/objects.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Depth Perception
Determining the relative distance between objects/figures/landmarks.
Multi-Sensory Processing- Stereognosis
Without use of vision, ability to identify sizes/shapes/weight of familiar objects using tactile and proprioceptive information.
