fluid inside a synovial joint
Should be clear or slightly yellow
if turbid - may indicate the presence of cells, protein or cartilage

A
18 - 23G x 1 inch needle 1,2,5ml syringe Sterile EDTA tubes - PLAIN tubes Gloves Drape Clippers Skin prep Clean slides Local anaesthetic at sample site

synovial fluid sampling technique
A
Joint must be flexed
for internal cytology - Smear onto slide - stain with Leishman’s stain
for external lab - centrifuge, pipette off supernatent, transfer deposit into plain & EDTA tubes
