Body Cavities Flashcards
Cranial Cavity
houses the skull
Dorsal cavity
Ventral cavity
Dorsal- posterior of the body
ventral- anterior of the body
what’s the deal with a dorsal cavity
protects the fragile nervous system, part of the axial portion.
2 subdivisions:
- cranial cavity- houses the brain
- vertebral cavity or vertebral canal- houses the spinal cord
vertebrae
backbone
what’s the deal with the ventral cavity?
Houses the internal organs called the viscera.
2 subdivisions, which are separated by the respiratory diaphragm:
- Thoracic cavity- houses heart and lungs
- abdominopelvic cavity- houses the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity
what’s the deal with the thoracic cavity?
two pleural cavities that house one lung separated by the mediastinum(in the middle of the lungs).
Mediastinum- contains the pericardial cavity(which contains the heart) and other remaining thoracic organs(esophagus, trachea, and thymus gland)
What’s the deal with the abdominopelvic cavity?
Subdivision of the ventral cavity separated from the thoracic cavity by the diaphragm.
contains 2 cavities:
- abdominal cavity- contains the stomach, liver, intestines, and spleen, gallbladder, kidneys.
- pelvic cavity- contains the urinary bladder, terminal portion of the large intestine, internal reproductive organs, rectum.
