Body Cavities Flashcards
Major body cavities and contained organs
2 Major body cavity regions
Dorsal & Ventral
Ventral cavity includes what (2) cavities:
Thoracic & Abdominalpelvic (and subdivisions)
Dorsal cavity includes what (2) cavities:
Cranial & Spinal
(3) Thoracic cavity subdivisions:
-Pleural cavity
(2- each houses a lung)
-Mediastinum
(contains pericardial cavity)
(surrounds thoracic organs)
-Pericardial cavity
(**cavity within the mediastinum)
(encloses the heart)
(2) Abdominalpelvic cavity subdivisions:
-Abdominal cavity
(stomach, intestines, spleen, liver)
-Pelvic cavity
(urinary bladder, reproductive organs, rectum)
What is a serous membrane
Thin, double layered membrane separated by serous fluid that lines the pericardial cavity (***balloon/fist figure)
What is the Parietal Serosa
External body wall of the serous membrane
What is the Visceral Serosa
Part of the serous membrane that covers the internal organs
What is the AXIAL portion of the body?
head, neck, trunk
What is the APPENDICULAR portion of the body?
arms, legs
What are the serous membranes of the heart? *(and the space between the two?)
visceral pericardium
parietal pericardium
pericardial cavity
What are the serous membranes of the lungs? *(and the space between the two?)
visceral pluera
parietal pluera
plueral cavity
What are the serous membranes of the abdonimal? *(and the space between the two?)
visceral peritoneum
parietal peritoneum
peritoneal cavity
