Dorsal cavity
Located near the posterior surface of the body with two subdivisions; cranial cavity and vertebral canal.
Cranial cavity
Formed by the cranial bones and contains the brain
Vertebral canal
Formed by the vertebral column and contains the spinal cord.
Ventral cavity
Located on the anterior aspect of the body and has two main subdivisions; superior thoracic and inferior abdominopelvic cavities.
Thoracic cavity
Enclosed by the ribs, muscles of the chest, sternum and thoracic portion of the vertebral column.
Pericardial cavity
A fluid-filled space that surrounds the heart, and two pleural cavities lie within the thoracic cavity.
Abdominopelvic cavity
Extends from the diaphragm to the groin and is encircled by the abdominal wall and the bones and muscles of the pelvis.
Pelvic cavity
Contains urinary bladder, portions of the large intestine, and internal organs of the reproductive system.
Peritoneum
Serous membrane of abdominal cavity
Visceral peritoneum
Covers the abdominal viscera
Parietal peritoneum
Lines abdominal wall
