Anatomical movements Flashcards
Abduction
Movement away from the midline. The arm is moved away from the body.
Adduction
Movement towards the midline. The arm is moved towards the body.
Lateral rotation
Rotation in the long axis of a bone and away from the midline. The arm is rotated so that the thumb is away from the body.
Medial rotation
Rotation on the long axis of the bone towards the midline. The arm is rotated so that the thumb is towards the body.
Flexion
The act of bending or the condition of being bent.
Extension
The act of straightening. The movement by which a limb is straightened.
Lateral flexion
Side to side movement. The neck is moved to the side (the ear to the shoulder).
Dorsiflexion
‘True extension’ In the foot, the toes are raised towards the ankle.
Plantar flexion
‘true flexion’ In the foot the toes are pointed away from the ankle.
Pronation
Moving to the prone position. Turning the palm to face backward, by medially (the thumb towards the body) rotating forearm.
Supination
Moving to the supine position. Turning the palm forward by lateral (turning the thumb away from the body) rotation of the forearm.
Inversion
Turning inwards. In the forefoot, the sole is turned to the midline.
Eversion
Turning away. In the forefoot, the sole is turned away from the midline.
