pleura
double membrane that surrounds the lungs and heart
mediastinum
centrally located space outside of and between the lungs
houses heart, aorta, trachea, esophagus, thymus gland, bronchial tubes, many lymph nodes
abdominal cavity
houses peritoneum, small intestine, large intestine, liver, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys
peritoneum
double-folded membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity
attaches organs to abdominal muscles
surrounds organs to hold them in place
kidneys are located in the retroperitoneal area (behind the abdominal cavity)
diaphragm
muscular wall that divides the abdominal and thoracic cavities
pelvic cavity
houses portions of small and large intestines, rectum, bladder, urethra, ureters, uterus, and vagina
spinal cavity
houses the nerves of the spinal cord
