What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Protects vital organs
Supports the weight of individuals
Enables us (along with muscles) to move
Production of red and some white blood cells in the bone marrow
What is bone and what is it made of?
Living tissue made of ostecoytes, calcium deposits and collagen
What is the role of red bone marrow ?
Supplies the millions of red blood cells which are needed everyday to replace those that are old and worn out
What is the role of yellow bone marrow?
Stores fat
What are bones penetrated by and what does this do?
Blood vessels and nerves which keep the bone cells alive
What are joints?
Where two bones meet
What joints do humans have?
Fixed or immovable joints (pelvis, skull)
Partially moveable joints (Vertebrae)
Freely moveable joints:
- Ball and socket joints (hips, shoulders)
- Hinge joints (elbows, knee, fingers)
- Gliding joints (hands and feet)
What are the three groups of muscles?
- Skeletal
- Smooth
- Cardiac
Explain Skeletal muscles?
Attached to the skeleton.
They are voluntary because we can make them work without thinking
Explain smooth muscles?
Involuntary and may be found in the stomach wall to help us digest food, or in the iris of the eye to help open and close pupils
Explain cardiac muscles
Involuntary found around the heart. These muscles allow regular contractions of the heart
What is the circulatory system?
Transports oxygen, food substances and heat around the body
White blood cells and platelets are transported to where they are need to fight diseases and repairing wounds
Waste products are also collected and transported to where they can be removed or processed by the body
What are the three main elements of the circulatory system?
Heart
