Body and Fluid Compartments Flashcards
What percentage of body fluid is extra and intra cellular?
33% extra
67% intra
What organelles have cell membranes?
Secretory granule
Nuclear membrane
Mitochondrion
Granular endoplasmic reticulum
SER
Lysosome
Golgi
What are the different compositions of the cell membrane?
55%- Protein
25%- Phospholipid
13%- Cholesterol
4%- Other lipids
3%- Carbohydrates
What are the functions of membrane proteins?
Provide structural channels for water soluble substances to pass through
Transporters to move substances against a concentration gradient
Some are receptors for water soluble chemicals
What are integral proteins?
Proteins that are embedded in the membrane and require membrane disruption to purify e.g transporters
What can pass directly through the lipid bilayer?
Carbone dioxide
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Halothane
And other lipid soluble substances
What cannot pass directly through the membrane?
Water and water soluble substances
What effects the net diffusion rate through cell membranes?
Concentration
Electrical potential
Pressure
What is net diffusion proportional to?
Concentration on the outside minus the concentration on the inside
How does electrical potential effect diffusion?
It drives the movement of ions to the opposite poles
How does pressure effect diffusion?
Increased pressure causes a net increase in movement from high pressure to low pressure
What is the permeability co-efficient?
Rate of movement calculated in cm/sec
Equation for permeability
P= omega x gas constant x absolute temperature x (molecule resistance/thickness of membrane)
Where does diffusion occur?
Through pores and channels
