BLS Basics Flashcards
What is CCF? What is the optimal value?
CCF is the chest compression fraction: the amount of time spent giving chest compressions compared to pauses; you should be delivering chest compressions AT LEAST 60% of the time
What changes when an advanced airway is in place for CPR? Infants and adults?
continuous compressions 100-120 compressions per minute; 1 breath every 6 seconds for all ages
If opioid OD is suspected what should you do?
if they have a pulse but aren’t breathing, administer breaths first- DO NOT DELAY BREATHS for naloxone; if no breathing and no pulse, administer CPR first and then naloxone later
How do you give the heimlich maneuver?
find belly button, use thumb side of fist above bellybutton and under the breast bone; grasp fist with the other hand and administer a quick, forceful, upward thrust
How long should you administer the heimlich maneuver?
keep administering, making each thrust a separate distinct, movement to relieve the obstruction. until the object is expelled from the airway or the victim becomes unresponsive
What should you do if the victim is too big to wrap your arms around?
chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts
What should you do after relieving choking from an unrepsonsive victim?
the usual- check for pulse and stuff
How should you help a choking infant?
place them facedown over your forearm and give 5 back slaps with the heel of your hand between the infant’s shoulder blades and 5 chest thrusts; repeat until unresponsive or object is removed
