AED Flashcards
What are the two arrhythmias that can cause cardiac arrest?
pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF)
When should the feedback device be used?
during the delivery of breaths
When is AED and CPR most effective? (after onset)
within 3-5 minutes of collapse
How soon should AED be delivered relative to CPR?
AED as soon as possible- as there has been no evidence to suggest benefit of CPR before defibrillation within 90-180 seconds of collapse; CPR while AED is arriving
How do you place the AED pads anterolaterally?
1) anterolateral placement: both on chest- 1 directly below right collar bone, the other pad to the side of the left nipple- a few inches below the armpit
How do you place the AED pads anteriorposterior?
place one AED on the left side of the chest, halfway between the left breastbone and left nipple (upper edge of the pad below the nipple line) 2) place the other pad on the left side of the victim’s back below the left shoulder blade and next to the spine
What are ways you can reduce interruptions in compressions?
have one person place the AED pads, while the other person continues compressions; continue CPR until the AED gives clear instructions to clear the area; immediately resume compressions after shock
When should CPR person pause chest compressions?
before analysis and during shock delivery
What should you do if someone has a hairy chest?
if there are 2 AED pads, apply the pads, and if it doesn’t work, rip them forcefully to remove hair and apply new set of pads; if only one set of pads, it should include a razor- shave the area quickly before applying pads
What should you do if someone has a pacemaker?
you’ll see a protrusion (smaller than a deck of cards); avoid putting the pad directly over the area
What should you do if someone has a medicine patch?
pull it off quickly- wipe the area, then place the pad
How long should you minimize compression interruptions to?
10 seconds
