Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the 3 types of blood vessel?
Artery
Vein
Capillary
What is the role of arteries?
Transport blood away from the heart
What is the blood pressure of arteries?
High blood pressure
Pulse can be felt
What is the blood like in an artery?
Blood flow is rapid.
Low blood volume.
Blood is oxygenated. (except pulmonary)
What is the structure of an artery?
Thick wall Small lumen No semi-lunar valves Elastic and smooth muscle tissue Tunics media thick
What is the role of veins?
Transport blood towards the heart
What is the blood pressure in veins?
Blood pressure low
No pulse can be felt
What is the blood like in a vein?
Blood flow slow
High blood volume
Deoxygenated blood
What is the structure of a vein?
Thin wall Large Lumen Semi-lunar valves Few elastic fibres/ Slightly muscular Tunica media thin
What is the role of semi-lunar valves in veins?
Prevent the back flow of blood
What is the role of capillaries?
Link aertrtioles to venules
Site of exchange between blood and tissue.
What is blood pressure of capillaries?
Falling blood pressure
No pulse felt
What is the blood in a capillary like?
Blood flow is slow
High blood volume
Mix of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
What is the structure of a capillary?
Very thin wall- 1 cell thick
No semi-lunar valves
No elastic fibres- only squamous endothelium
No Tunica media
What is the order of blood vessels in the body?
Atery > arteriole > capillary > venule > vein
