Blood Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
Artery
A
- Take blood away from the heart
- elastic walls from high pressure
- have a pulse
- form smaller vessels called arterioles which connect to the capillary
- carotid is in your neck and has a pulse
2
Q
Vein
A
- takes blood from body to heart
- Thin walled with valves for one way flow
- not elastic
3
Q
Capillaries
A
- connect arteries and veins
- Diameter is one cell thick
- are the smallest blood vessels and are spread through the body in a network
- where gasses and other materials are transferred from blood to tissues and vice versa
4
Q
Regulating temperature
A
Blood vessels can dilate or constrict
- exercise causes more heat to be carried to the skin to be released as sweat
- when cold blood vessels constrict reducing heat through your skin and you shiver
5
Q
Blood pathway in vessels
A
- Heart
- Aorta
- Arteries
- Arterioles
- Capillaries
- Venules
- Veins
- Vena cava
- Heart
6
Q
Varicose veins
A
Raised veins due to damaged valves and stretched walls
- blood pools and bunches in veins
- This can be caused by prolonged standing
