Blood Pressure Flashcards
1
Q
Blood pressure
A
Force of blood against artery walls during ventricular contraction ( systole ) and during ventricular relaxation ( diastole )
Blood pressure = systole/Diastole, and average is 120/80, 140/90 is considered high
Measured using a sphygmomanometer
2
Q
Diastole
A
Most important because it determines the pressure on arteries when ventricles are relaxed
3
Q
Factors affecting Blood pressure
A
- Heart rate
- Blood vessel size: Narrower = High blood pressure
4
Q
Regulation of blood pressure
A
Low BP- difficult to transport blood to tissues
High BP- weakening and hardening of artery, ruptures blood vessels
5
Q
Hypertension
A
Known as the silent killer, caused by increased resistance to blood flow
- Blood vessels weaken and may rupture, artery’s become hard
6
Q
Causes of hypertension
A
- Heredity
- Diet- excess salt and high fat
7
Q
Hypotension
A
- Blood pressure is too low, caused by dehydration, severe bleeding, inflammation of internal organs, and drug toxicity
8
Q
Pressure and blood flow
A
- As area that blood flows through increases, pressure drops, highest cross sectional area in in the capillaries
- Blood travels slowest through the capillaries and fastest in the arteries
- Blood has the highest pressure in the arteries and decreases from arteries to capillaries to veins
- speed in the arteries goes arteries, veins, capillaries
