How can you measure amplitude of a pulse?

A

0+: Absent, not palpable
1+: Diminished, barely palpable
2+: Expected
3+: Full, increased
4+: Bounding pulse

How do you palpate the carotid arteries?

A

Never palpate both sides simultaneously; this can cause drop in BP or syncope due to compromised blood flow.

How do you measure edema?

A

1+: Slight pitting and disappears rapidly
2+: Deeper pit and disappears in 10-15 seconds
3+: Noticeably deep pit that lasts more than a minute; dependent extremity looks full and swollen
4+: Very deep pit that lasts as long as 2-5 minutes
