Blood vessels Flashcards
What is the inner layer of blood vessels?
Tunica intima
What is the middle layer?
Tunica media
What is the outer layer?
Tunica adventitia
What does the intima consist of?
Single layer of endothelial cells.
What does the endothelium do?
Secretes vasoactive products and is a barrier to plasma proteins
What does the media consist of?
Collagen and elastin matrix
What does the media layer do?
Provides mechanical strength, elasticity and contractility
What is the adventitia like?
No distinct outer border
What does the adventitia do?
tethers vessels loosely in place
What is the small blood vessel network in the adventitia called?
Vaso vasorum which are responsible for nourishing the media
What diameter are elastic arteries?
1-2 cm
Examples of elastic arteries
aorta, pulmonary trunk, iliac arteries
Diameter of conduit arteries?
0.1-1cm
What does the media of conduit arteries contain?
More smooth muscle. Highly innervated
Diameter of arterioles
less than 0.1cm
