Q

What is arteries in blood vessels?

A

arteries flow away from the heart

narrower lumen than vein

blood is at higher pressure
elasti tissue and folded endothelium - allows heart to stretch and when ventricles relax they recoil which maintains a smooth pressuure

thick muscle - can contract and change the flow of blood (vascodilation)

Q

What is veins in blood vessels?

A
veins flow towards the heart
wide lumen
thin layer of muscle (cant contract)
smooth endothelium - reduces friction
one way valve - prevents backflow of blood
low pressure

Q

What is capillaries in blood vessels?

A

surround all cells and exchange stuff e.g. O2 / glucose

endothelium is thin - short diffusion distance
high surface area - fast rate of diffusion
