Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are parts of the arteries?
elastic tissue
thick layer of muscle
folded endothelium
narrower lumen
What is arteries in blood vessels?
arteries flow away from the heart
narrower lumen than vein
blood is at higher pressure
elasti tissue and folded endothelium - allows heart to stretch and when ventricles relax they recoil which maintains a smooth pressuure
thick muscle - can contract and change the flow of blood (vascodilation)
What are parts of the veins?
thin muscle (outer layer) wide lumen (middle part)
What is veins in blood vessels?
veins flow towards the heart wide lumen thin layer of muscle (cant contract) smooth endothelium - reduces friction one way valve - prevents backflow of blood low pressure
What is capillaries in blood vessels?
surround all cells and exchange stuff e.g. O2 / glucose
endothelium is thin - short diffusion distance
high surface area - fast rate of diffusion
