Blood transfusion and the ABO Rhesus system (Rh) Flashcards
How is a blood group determined?
Immunological reaction between antigen and antibody.
How many blood groups are there and there names?
- There are 8 groups
- A+ A- O+ O- B+ B- AB+ AB-
What is an antigen?
Protein on the surface of every cell membrane
What is an antibody?
A blood protein produced to counteract a specific antigen to make it inactive
What antibody can group A have
Antibody B
What antigen can group A have
Antigen A
What antibody can group B have
Antibody A
What antigen can group B have
Antigen B
What antibody can group AB have
None, its a universal recipient
What antigen does group AB have
Antigen A and B
What antibody can group O have
Antibody A and B
What antigen can group O have
None, its a universal donor
Blood compatability?
O = Universal donor ( O+ receives transfusions from O+ or O- blood types, O- only receives O-)
B = AB’s, B’s
AB = universal recipient ( gives blood to other AB’s)
A =AB’s A’s
What infections are looked for when testing donated blood?
