blood transfusion Flashcards
what is the difference with FFP donation as opposed to red cel donation ?
FFP groups can only get from a group that has any of the same groups as them
what is screened for in blood donors ?
sex age travel tattoos tested for ABO and Rh screened for Hep B/C/E, HIV, syphillis
what are indications for red cell transfusion ?
correct severe acute anaemia which might otherwise cause organ damage
improve QOL in uncorrectable anaemia
prepare patient for surgery/speed up recovery
reverse damage caused by own cells - sickle cell
what are features of red cell storage/infusion ?
stored at 4 degrees
transfuse over 2-4 hours
1 unit increments 5g/l
what are features of platelet storage and infusion ?
stored at -22 degrees
shelf life 7 days
transfuse over 20-30 mins
when is platelet transfusion indicated ?
massive haemorrhage
bone marrow failure
prophylaxis for surgery
cardiopulmonary bypass
when is FFP transfusion indicated ?
massive haemorrhage
DIC with bleeding
prophylactic
what is Coombs test ?
red cells mixed with auto-antibody to test for autoimmunity
what does a direct Coombs test indicate ?
autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
passive anti-D
haemolytic transfusion reaction
what is haemolytic disease of fetes and newborn HDFN ?
RhD positive fetus, RhD negative mother
mother produces anti-D antibodies which cross placenta
how do you prevent HDFN ?
prophylactic anti-D to sensitise mother
