Blood Transfusion Flashcards
Define Blood Transfusion
the transfer of blood, or of some of the components of blood, into the circulation of a person.
Define ABO Blood Group System
A method of classifying blood types according to the antigens on the surface of the RBC’s.
Define Rh Blood Group System
A method of classifying blood types according to the antigens on the surface of the RBC’s
Define Aggluuination
The clumping together of micro-organisms or of blood cells.
Type 1 of Blood Transfusions - Whole Blood
-Blood taken from the donor but with a chemical added to prevent clotting.
-Used mainly in cases of severe blood loss.
Type 2 of Blood Transfusions - Cryoprecipitate
Blood product used in transfusions; produced by freezing plasma and thawing it slowly. It remains solid. It contains many of the substances necessary for blood clotting.
E.g. Used in some forms of haemophilia, but mostly for severe bleeding.
Type 3 of Blood Transfusions - Platelet Concentrates
Are given to patients who have abnormal platelets or a reduced number of platelets.
Type 4 of Blood Transfusions - Autologous Transfusion
A transfusion using the patients blood.
E.g. Patient uses their own blood that was collected weeks ago before their surgery. It eliminates the risk of transmission of disease and most possible side effects of the usual transfusions.
