A

-Blood taken from the donor but with a chemical added to prevent clotting.
-Used mainly in cases of severe blood loss.

Type 2 of Blood Transfusions - Cryoprecipitate

A

Blood product used in transfusions; produced by freezing plasma and thawing it slowly. It remains solid. It contains many of the substances necessary for blood clotting.

E.g. Used in some forms of haemophilia, but mostly for severe bleeding.

A

Are given to patients who have abnormal platelets or a reduced number of platelets.

Type 4 of Blood Transfusions - Autologous Transfusion

A

A transfusion using the patients blood.

E.g. Patient uses their own blood that was collected weeks ago before their surgery. It eliminates the risk of transmission of disease and most possible side effects of the usual transfusions.
