Osmosis Flashcards
Explain Permeable Membrane
Allows all substances to pass through.
Explain Semipermeable Membrane
Allows only certain materials to pass through.
Explain Osmosis
Movement of water through a differently permeable membrane from a high concentrated solution to a low concentrated solution.
Explain Simple Diffusion
Movement of materials from high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium is achieved.
Explain the Difference Between Passive & Active Transport?
Passive requires no energy to occur.
E.g. Simple diffusion of through carrier proteins or channel proteins.
Active requires ATP to open the carrier proteins and move material from a low to high concentration.
Explain the Difference Between Endocytosis and Exocytosis?
Endocytosis is the taking of solids (phagocytosis) and liquids (pinocytosis).
Exocytosis is when materials leave a cell through a vesicle.
Explain Hypertonic
If a cell is places in a hypertonic solution, there will be a net flow of water out of the cell, and the cell will loose volume.
Explain Hypotonic
If a cell is placed into a hypotonic solution, there will be a net flow of water into the cell, and the cell will gain volume.
Explain Isotonic
If a cell is placed into a isotonic solution, there will be not net flow of water into or out of the cell, and the cell’s volume will remain stable.
What Happens when a Cell is Placed in a Hypertonic Solution?
The cell will shrink and shrivel.
What Happens when a Cell is Placed in a Hypotonic Solution?
The cell with swell and can burst.
What Happens when a Cell is Placed in a Isotonic Solution?
No change at all.
