Blood donation in the uk
- voluntary unpaid donors
-restrictions on donors eg dates of previous donations/transfusions,pregnancy,cvd
Purpose of donor selection
-protect donor from harm
-protect recipient from any ill effects of transfusion such as infectious disease
Donor criteria
-fit and healthy
-between 50-158kg
-aged between 17-66(70 if you have given blood before)
Clinical donor restrictions
-donate 470 ml of their blood which should be no more than 13% of their total circulating volume in order to prevent anaemia and vasovagal reactions eg fainting
-frequency of donation(16 weeks)
-no carryover effect on recipient eg aspiring or medical condition such as diabetes
-minimum pre donation hub concentration is 125g/l for female and 135g/l for males
-minimum hb should be 40 g
In the uk what are donations screened for
- HBV, HCV, HEV
- HIV1 and HIV2
- HTLV 1 and HTLV 2
- Treponema palladium (Syphilis)
Optional testing in the uk
Malaria, West Nile Virus (according to travel /residence history)
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease)
What is the variant creutzfeldt Jakob disease
-disease causing agent is a prion
-humans eat infected meat=vCJD exposure=symptoms=decades
-can be transmitted from person to person via medical products/instruments
