Why is taking a pt blood pressure important?
Taking blood pressure is one of the most important vital signs, it identifies the force of the blood circulating through the arteries.
Why is it important to take an accurate blood pressure reading?
It’s important because the reading can affect the patient’s treatment or additional diagnostic tests .
what are the equipment required for taking a blood pressure?
a stethoscope, a blood pressure cuff , and a sphygmomanometer
what is the blood pressure measured by ?
millimeters of mercury ( mm Hg)
What is the first sound/ number you hear called when you’re taking BP?
the systolic pressure is recorded when the first sharp tapping is heard, this is when the blood starts to circulate into the arteries that had been occluded ( blocked ) by the inflation of the cuff
what are these two readings called ?
they are called phase 1 and 5 Korotoff sounds or distinct sounds you hear from the cardiac cycle
What factors affect BP
age , internal conditions and external influences. and genetics can affect the predisposition of developing hypertension
what is the average range of BP for infants and children?
60/30 to 100/80 mm Hg
what is the average range BP for adults ?
100/60 to 140/80 mm Hg
what is considered a normal BP ?
blood pressure lower than 119/79 mm Hg is considered normal
What is considered a BP reading of Hypertension?
BP 140/90 mm Hg or higher
What is the range of BP that shows pre hypertension?
a top number between 120-139
and a bottom number of 80-89
