Blood pressure Flashcards
What generates blood pressure in the heart?
the left ventricle
Left ventricle BP
-the blood pressure here fluctuates a lot
- 120 mmHg (contract) to almost 0 (relaxed)
Aortic BP
-pressure in the left ventricle = pressure in aorta (120-80 mmHg)
this is because of the opening of aortic semilunar valve
Capillaries
-one layer
-where diffusion happens which works best for short distance
Elastic Arteries
-thick walls, a lot of smooth muscle, elastin
-can take pressure and volume to out to aorta
Arterioles
-thinner walls smooth muscle
-can feel pulse
Ventricular contraction
aorta is directly connected to left ventricle
-when the ventricle contracts, pushes the stroke volume to aorta
-Aorta and arteries expand and store pressure in elastic walls
Ventricular relaxation
-when relaxed blood will want to go back into the ventricle
-aortic semilunar valve prevents it from doing that
-smooth muscle control keeps blood going in upward direction to the rest of the circulatory system
Blood pressure
Systolic/ diastolic
Pulse pressure
systolic - diastolic
Mean arterial pressure (MAP)
diastolic + 1/3 (pulse)
or
1/3 (systolic) + 2/3 (diastolic)
