Blood Part 1 & 2 Flashcards
What it does, what's it made of
Plasma
matrix of nonliving fluid
Formed elements-Living Blood Cells
Erythrocytes (RBCs)
Leukocytes (WBCs)
Platelets
Hematocrit
% of blood volume that is RBCs
Erythrocytes
Transport oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide ( CO2)
Granulocytes (Neutrophil)
Phagocytize pathogens or debris
Eosinophil
Kill parasitic worms: slightly phagocytic: complex role in allergy and asthma
Basophil
Release histamine and other mediators of inflammation
Agranulocyte (Lymphocyte)
Mount immune response to direct cell attack or via antibody production
Monocyte
develop into macrophages in tissues and phagocytize pathogens and debris
Platelets
seal small tears in blood vessels: instrumental in blood clotting
What is a Granulocyte?
it contains visible cytoplasmic granules (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils)
What is a Agranulocyte?
does NOT contain visible cytoplasmic granules (lymphocytes, monocytes)
Ranking of order of differential count
N-eutrophils
L-ymphocytes
M-onocytes
E-osinophils
B-asophils
T lymphocytes (T cells)
act against virus-infected cells and tumor cells
B lymphocytes (B cells)
give rise to plasma cells, which produce anti bodies
Colony-stimulating Factors (CSFs)
named for WBC type they stimulate
