Blood, Lymphatic, and immune system test Flashcards
Acquired Immunity
Immunity due to past exposure
Adaptive Immunity
adapted ability to react to pathogens
Agranulocyte
white blood cells that simply lack any granules within their cytoplasm (monocytes and lymphocytes)
Adenoids
Small masses behind nasal cavity; traps pathogens
Aplastic anemia
bone marrow can’t make enough blood cells
Antigen
markers that tell the body something is foreign
Apheresis
Removal of blood via a machine
B cell
A type of WBC that makes antibodies
Basophil
Stains blue; releases histamines for inflammatory response
Blood transfusions
Transfering blood into a patient
Bone marrow
Center of bones; makes blood
Cytotoxic T cell
Destroys infected cells
Hemolysis
The destruction of RBC
Eosinophil
Stains red; targets large parasites and regulates allergic inflammatory response
Granulocyte
Most common; contains granules that fight infection (ex: Eosinophils, neutrophils, basophils)
Fibrin
A protein from blood clotting
Helper T cell
Sends signals that direct other immune cells to help fight infections
Hematocrit
The measuring of percentage of blood in your body that is RBC
Hematopoietic stem cell
An immature cell that can develop into all types of blood cells
Hemophilia
Disorder where blood doesn’t clot right due to a lack of blood clotting factors
Macrophage
A type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills microorganisms
Inflammatory Response
swelling; occurs when tissues are injured
Leukemia
Cancer of the blood cells
Lymph
Fluid that flows through the lymphatic system
