Blood Histology Flashcards
What are the 3 types of granulocyte?
Neutrophil, basophil and eosinophil
Describe the appearance of neutrophils
Lobed nuclei, pink cytoplasmic granules
Describe the appearance of eosinophils
Bi-lobed nuclei with brick red granules
Describe the appearance of basophils
Bi-lobed nuclei with large, dark purple granules
Describe the appearance of monocytes
Kidney shaped nuclei with light grey cytoplasm
Describe the appearance of lymphocytes
Large round nuclei, little cytoplasm
Describe the role of neutrophils
Most common leucocyte in blood, and is first line defence against pathogens (phagocytose and digest)
Describe the role of basophils
Binding of IgE –> degranulation (histamine and heparin)
Describe the role of eosinophils
Defence against parasites (increased numbers in allergic disease)
