Blood groups Flashcards
How are blood groups determined
according to antigens expressed on the surface of erythrocytes
what are alloantibodies
specific antibodies directed against erythrocytes antigens present in the same species but not in the individual producing the antibody
Describe 3 ways alloantibodies can occur
Naturally in some species (cats) through sensitization by birth of foal with mismatched blood group, through sensitization with mismatched blood transfusion
What is DEA
dog erythrocyte antigen
What are the 3 blood groups in cats
A, B and AB
What happens if type B cats recieve type A blood
Intravascular haemolysis of type A donor blood, may be fatal, rapidly occuring
What happens if type A cats recieve type B blood
Extravascular haemolysis, mild signs will take a few days
alloantibodies in type A cats
anti-B at a low level but it is very common
alloantibodies in type B cats
anti-A at a high level but it is less common
alloantibodies in type AB cats
non but it is very rare
name the horse blood groups
A, C, D, K, P, Q, U
What does blood testing in dogs do
testing to see if the dog is DEA 1.1 positive or not
Why do we test dogs for DEA 1.1
Because this is the most immunogenic of dog erythrocyte antigens
Dscribe blood testing in cats
tests for all 3 cat blood groups
What does blood group testing show
antigen pattern on the erythrocytes
What is oxyglobin
chemically modified haemoglobin of bovine origin
How do you know how much blood to transfuse into a animal
2ml of blood per kilo of weight will raise the PCV by 1%
Why do we do a blood transfusion
provide support
correct deficiencies
control disease
Why do we want dog donors to be DEA 1.1 or 1.2 negative
because they are very immunogenic
How much blood can you collect from donors
10% of their total blood volume
List the criteria for canine blood donors
Healthy lean body weight under 25kg 1-8 years old no previous pregnancies and females should be neutered PCV >35% vaccinated wormed
List the criteria for feline blood donors
Healthy lean body weight of less than 4.5kg 1-8 years old no previous pregnacies and females should be neutered PCV>35% vaccinated wormed
