Blood cells Flashcards
What is a neutrophil?
the first white blood cells to migrate to the site of infection to begin killing the infected microbes
What is an eosinophil?
implicated in numerous inflammatory processes
What is a basophil?
prevent blood from clotting too quickly and promote blood flow to tissues
What are reticulocytes?
immature red blood cell that retains small amounts of RNA and can be stained by cresyl violet and methylene blue
What is a lymphocyte?
respond to foreign invaders in the body by releasing antibodies
What is a monocyte?
involved in phagocytosis, antigen presentation and cytokine production
What is chemotaxis?
the movement of an organism in response to a chemical stimulus
What is the differential count and why is it useful?
the proportion of different leucocytes in the blood - this can determine how a disease is affecting your WBC
What are the two types of immune response?
- humeral which involves plasma cells
- cell-mediated which involves cytotoxic killer cells
