Cell adhesion and the ECM Flashcards
What is the function of fibroblasts?
synthesise collagens, elastin and proteoglycans
What is the function of proteoglycans?
provide matrix support
What is the structure if glycosaminoglycans?
highly charged with repeating disaccharides
How is collagen synthesised?
synthesised in the RER and assembled to form a triple helix
What is the function of myofibroblasts?
- secrete collagen
- sythesise actin, myosin and desmin
- reduce tissue damage
What is the structure and function of mast cells?
- filled with basophil granules
- release histamine during inflammation and allergic reactions
What is the function of plasma cells?
antibody production through the secretory pathway
What are the 4 types of cell junctions?
tight junctions
gap junctions
adherens junctions
desmosomes
What are focal adhesions?
link the outside of the cell (ECM) to the cytoskeleton through transmembrane proteins
What is the cause of Muscular Dystrophy?
a gene mutation which is the absence of an adaptor due to premature termination of translation
