Russell presents Mickey as a conventional working-class citizen whose lack of opportunities led to his tragic death. Russell perhaps uses Mickey as a vehicle to critique Thatcherite Britain in which the prime minister: Margaret Thatcher believed that anyone who worked hard enough will eventually be entitled to a finer life. Russell challenges this belief in Blood Brothers: it is not hard work that makes Mickey and Edward’s lives so different; it is the opportunities that their backgrounds provide for them.
