Blood & Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What is the function of arteries?
-Carry blood away from heart
-Carry high blood pressure
What is the structure of the arteries?
-Thick layers of muscle
-Have a small lumen
-Elastic
What is the function of the veins?
-Carry blood to the heart
-Carry low pressure blood
What is the structure of the veins?
-Large lumen to maintain blood flow
-Thin wall
-Have valves to keep blood flowing
What is the function of capillaries?
-Exchange at tissues
-Carry blood close to cells all over the body to exchange of substances
What is the structure of capillaries?
-Tiny vessels
-Small lumen
-Extremely thin permeable walls
What is blood?
A tissue, it is carried around the body in blood vessels
What is the function of blood?
-Transporting substances
-Defence against pathogens
-Control of body temperature
-Maintaining pH of fluids
What are the 3 types of blood cells?
-Red blood cells
-White blood cells
-Platelets
Where are red blood cells produced?
In bone marrow
What do red blood cells need to do?
Carry oxygen from the lungs to all of the cells in the body
What are 3 key adaptions of red blood cells?
-They have a biconcave shape
-They do not have a nucleus
-They contain a pigment called haemoglobin
What is the function of White Blood Cells?
-White blood cells are needed to defend the body against infection by pathogens
Where are white blood cells made?
In bone marrow
