Blood Bank Exam Deck A Flashcards
What is a attenuated vaccine
An attenuated vaccine is a vaccine created by reducing the virulence of a pathogen, but still keeping it viable. Attenuation takes an infectious agent and alters it so that it becomes harmless or less virulent. These vaccines contrast to those produced by “killing” the pathogen
Innate immunity
Innate, or nonspecific, immunity is the defense system with which you were born. It protects you against all antigens. Innate immunity involves barriers that keep harmful materials from entering your body. These barriers form the first line of defense in the immune response
Effector cells such as dendritic, macrophages, and neutrophils.
Adaptive immunity
Immunity that takes time to evolve but is specific.
The adaptive immune system, also called acquired immunity, uses specific antigens to strategically mount an immune response. Unlike the innate immune system, which attacks only based on the identification of general threats, the adaptive immunity is activated by exposure to pathogens, and uses an immunological memory to learn about the threat and enhance the immune response accordingly. The adaptive immune response is much slower to respond to threats and infections than the innate immune response, which is primed and ready to fight at all times.
Involves both B and T cells
Types of WBC capable of phagocytosis include
Macrophages( the best)
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
Basophils
Mast cells roll in the immune system
Involved in parasitic responses such and are activated by IgE activation.
Mast cells are involved in release of tumor necrosis factor.
Dendritic cells
professional antigen presenting cells that inform the fight against invasive pathogens while enforcing tolerance to self and harmless environmental antigens
Dendritic cells
in tissue that has contact with the outside environment, such as lung mucosa, epithelial cells of the skin, and the linings of the nose and the gastrointestinal tract
responsible for initiating all antigen-specific immune responses
Secondary lymphoid organs
Spleen, lymph nodes, pancreas, and Peyers patches
Secondary follicles are for B cell maturation?
