Q

What is the equation of continuity?

A

Flow rate must stay the same when velocity or area changes
for mass flow: density * A1 *v1 = density * A2 * v2
for volume flow: A1 * v1 = A2 * v2

What is fluid viscosity?

A

The resistance between adjacent layers of fluid as they pass each other
Characterised by coefficient of viscosity (η)

What is laminar flow?

A

Laminar flow is when adjacent layers of fluid move past one another

Q

What is turbulent flow?

A

Turbulent flow is a flow type which occurs when fluids are moving at high speeds with low viscosities, and causes the fluid layers to mix

Q

What is Reynolds Number and how do you calculate it?

A

Reynolds Number is a constant which can determine which type of flow a fluid is undergoing. (low number -> laminar, high number -> turbulent)
Re = (density * velocity * length)/η

Q

What is Bernoulli’s Principle?

A

As speed of a fluid increases, its pressure decreases due to conservation of energy (for constant height)

Q

How can blood flow through arteries be modelled

A

Poiseulle’s Equation
Q = (delta P * pi * r^4)/(8 * η * L)
