Blood Flashcards
anisocytosis
the presence in the blood of erythrocytes exhibiting distinct variation in size; normal in some species, especially cattle
azurophilic
literally having an affinity for (staining with( azure; the name “azure” is applied to any one of several dyes used in hematology; azurophilic cell types usually stain blue to purple
buffy coat
an off-white layer consisting of leukocytes and platelets, observed above packed erythrocytes in centrifuged blood
CBC (complete blood count)
a series of tests performed on a blood sample, including erythrocyte count (millions/gl), erythrocyte indices, leukocyte counts (thousands/gl), and platelet count (hundreds of thousand/gl)
central pallor
the pale-staining (light) central area of erythrocytes, visible with light microscopy, resulting from the biconcavity of the erythrocytes; in domestic animals, central pallor is most prominent in canine erythrocytes
crenation
the formation of abnormal notching in the edge of erythrocytes, most often artifact; in domestic animals, crenation is most common in feline erythrocytes
differential leukocyte count
a count on a stained blood smear of the numbers of the different types of leukocytes, usually expressed as the number of each leukocyte type per gl of blood
Heinz (erythrocyte refractile) bodies
small (0.5 to 1 micrometer), round to oval inclusions, representing denatured hemoglobin, normally seen in some feline erythrocytes; are observed in routinely stained blood smears as single, blunt projections from the erythrocyte surface
hematocrit
the proportion of the volume of a centrifuged blood sample that is comprised of erythrocytes (packed red blood cells), usually measured as a percent; synonymous with packed cell volume (PCV)
hematology
the science dealing with the morphology of blood and blood-forming tissues, and with their physiology and pathology
Howell-Jolly bodies
small, smooth, round remnants of the nucleus, occasionally seen in erythrocytes; small numbers are normally present in erythrocytes of domestic mammals, especially horses and cats; increased numbers can be seen in anemia and following splenectomy
poikilocytosis
the presence in the blood of erythrocytes exhibiting distinct variations in shape; is normal in goat erythrocytes
polychromatophilia (polychromasia)
a condition in which erythrocytes, upon staining, show shades of blue tinged with pink; polychromasia is typical of reticulocytes
Romanowsky’s stain
any group of stains (ex: Wright’s stain and Diff-Quik) consisting of eosin and methylene blue used to demonstrate the formed elements of blood
rouleau formation
an abnormal group of erythrocytes, adhering together like a stain of coins; is most prominent in equine erythrocytes; “rouleaux” is the plural form
