Blood Flashcards
Phlebotomonist
An individual trained to draw blood from a patient (testing, transfusion, donation, or research)
Hematophobia
Fear of blood
What type of tissue is blood?
Connective
Hematocrit
The ratio of blood cells (rbc, wbc, platelets) to plasma (water, nutrient, amino acids), is a 45% to 55% ratio
Erthrocytes
Red blood cells
Leukocytes
White blood cells
Thrombocytes
Platelets
Hematopoeisis
Formation of blood cells, occurs in white marrow
EPO (erythropoietin)
Hormone that increases the production of red blood cells
What are main functions of RBC’s?
Transport oxygen, remove carbon dioxide
Hemoglobin
Molecule that binds with oxygen
What element is critical to synthesize hemoglobin?
Iron
Oxyhemoglobin vs Deoxyhemoglobin
Oxy=plenty of oxygen, bright red
Deoxy=low in oxygen, dark red
Anemia
Having too few blood cells
What are the two categories of WBC’s?
Granulocytes and agranulocytes
What are the five types of WBC’s?
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils (gran), monocytes, lymphocytes (agran)
Dermotographia
Excessive release of histamine, makes scratches look like welts
Neutrophils
60% of WBCs, active phagocytes, present in pus of wounds, several bodied nucluei
Eosinophil
2% of WBCs, mainly attacks parasites
Basophil
1% of WBCs, produces heparin=blood thinner, produces histamine=inflammatory reaction
Monocyte
6% of WBCs, become macrophages, first line of defense at infection site, horseshoe shaped nucleus
Lymphocyte
30% of WBCs, creates antibodies (main defense), larger dark nucleus
What is the purpose of platelets(thrombocytes)?
Clot blood and repair vessels
What are the three plasma proteins and there functions?
Albunmins (blood pressure), globulins (transport antibodies), and fibrinogen (blood clotting)
Hemophilia (bleeder’s disease)
Occurs when blood doesn’t clot
