Blood Flashcards
What are the four main parts of the blood?
- Plasma (55%)
- Platelets (1%)
- White blood cells (>1%)
- Red blood cells (44%)
What is plasma?
Straw coloured liquid that transports carbon dioxide, glucose, urea, digested food, hormones and sodium ions around the body
What are platelets?
Cell fragments that clot the blood, which stops blood loss and prevents infection
What are the two main types of white blood cell?
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes
What is the role of phagocytes?
Form the immune system, detect foreign antigens, engulfs pathogens, uses enzymes to digest pathogens and expel harmful waste products from the cell
What is the role of lymphocytes?
To produce antibodies specific to the antigen, which attach to complimentary antigens, which neutralises the pathogen
What is the role of red blood cells?
To carry O2 around the body
What are the adaptations of the red blood cell that make them suitable for the transportation of oxygen?
-Biconcave shape
-Which gives them a large surface area for absorbing oxygen
-No nucleus, so more space for oxygen
