Q

What is the lung’s role in cellular respiration?

A

To get the oxygen we need from the air all around us into our bloodstream, where it can be transported to the rest of the body

Q

Describe the passage the air takes once it’s been inhaled?

A
  1. Enters through the mouth and/or the nose
  2. Travels down the trachea
  3. Splits and goes down bronchi into each lung
  4. Bronchi split into bronchioles
  5. At the end of the bronchioles is the alveoli

Q

What does the diaphragm do when you breath in?

A

It contracts and flattens, to increase the volume of the chest cavity and gives space for the lungs to expand

Q

What do the ribs do when you breath in?

A

They get pulled up and out, to increase the volume of the chest cavity and gives space for the lungs to expand

Q

What does the diaphragm do when you breath out?

A

It relaxes and domes, to decrease the volume of the lungs, which forces air out

14
Q

Why do the alveoli have thin walls?

A

To create a short diffusion pathway, which increase the rate at which carbon dioxide and oxygen can diffuse across

Q

What is Coronary heart disease (CHD)?

A

The condition caused by smoking which causes the coronary arteries, which supply rich oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle, get narrowed or blocked

17
Q

What does CHD cause?

A

-Blocks/narrows the coronary artery
-Blood clots
-This reduces the flow of blood to the heart muscle
-As a result, the heart receives less oxygen, which is needed for aerobic respiration in muscle cells
-Muscle cells switch to anaerobic respiration
-Build up of lactic acid
-If blood supply is entirely cut off, the heart muscles die
-Heart attack

18
Q

What is the impact of exercise on breathing rate?

A

-Exercise increases breathing rate
-Increase in energy required for muscles to contract
-Therefore you need to aerobically respire more
-To get more oxygen to repay oxygen debt
