Blood Flashcards
What are the two main components of blood?
Plasma, blood cells and platelets
What is albumin and why is it important?
Its a protein in the blood carrier for free fatty acids, it maintains osmotic pressure, pulls fluid back in
What is haematopoiesis?
The making of red blood cells
How does the structure relate to the function of an erythrocyte?
it is bi- concave shape so it maximises its surface area to absorb oxygen, has no nucleus or organelle so more room for haemoglobin and it is flexible to fit through small capillaries
What is the primary function of an erythrocyte?
Carries oxygen nutrients and cellular metabolic waste to the organs
What is the primary function of a leukocytes?
Defence and Immunity- detect foreign material and destroy it
Name 2 leukocytes
Granulocytes eg basophils and Agranulocytes eg monocytes
What is a thrombocyte?
Its a platelet
What do platelets do?
Prevent and stop bleeding
