- oval, biconcave discs
- haemoglobin rich - carry O2 & CO2
- circulate around body every 60 seconds
- develop in Red Bone Marrow
- last 100 -120 days
- recycled in spleen, delivered to kidneys for disposal

blood plasma carries:
- water, nutrients, hormones
- heat, clotting agents,
- blood gases (O2 & CO2)
- electrolytes (minerals Na, Ca, Mg etc)
