BLOCK 3 Redox reactions + periodic trends(group1,group2) Flashcards
OIL RIG
Oxidation Is Loss (of electrons)
Reduction Is Gain (of electrons)
define: Oxidation number
Number given to an atom in a molecule or an ion based on the number of of electrons that this atom uses in chemical bonding
is alkali soluble in water
yes
are bases soluble in water
no
Why are group 1 metals called the alkali metals?
When dissolved in water, they give highly alkaline solution (pH 13-14)
Why are group 2 metals called the alkali earth metals?
compounds are not very soluble in water, therefore bases instead of alkali
What happens to the reactivity as you go down group 1
increases
What happens to the reactivity as you go down group 2
increases
why does reactivity increase down group 1 and 2
- increases electron shielding
- increased atomic charge
how is the increase in reactivity in group 2 shown?
Mg and Ba reactions with water
Describe the reaction of Ba with cold water
Ba sinks, bubbles of hydrogen form, colourless solution
Describe the reaction of Mg with water
mg reacts with steam not water
how is Ba stored in the lab?
parafin oil + airtight container
(reacts with O2 in the air)
how is Mg stored in the lab?
Less reactive so just kept in dry jar
