Block 3 Flashcards
What is the standard circling approach area radius for each circling approach category?
A) 1.3 B) 1.5 C) 1.7 D) 2.3 E) 4.5
What is a contact approach?
Pilot initiated
1 sm clear of clouds
Airport or preceding traffic in sight
What is a visual approach?
Must be VFR
Field in site or preceding traffic in sight
Pilot or ATC initiated
What are the 3 requirements to operate an aircraft below Decision Altitude (DA) or Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA)?
1) Continuous position to land on intended runway
2) Required Flight Visibility
3) Runway environment in sight
What actions must a pilot take if RAIM is lost prior to the FAF
The approach should not be completed using GPS since GPS no longer provides the required integrity
Is an LPV considered a precision approach?
NO…Even though LPV approaches have vertical guidance, they’re not considered precision approaches. Instead, they’re an approach with vertical guidance
What is the maximum holding speed below 6000?
200 knots
What is the maximum holding speed below 6001-14000
230 knots
What is the maximum holding speed below 14001 and above
265 knots
When do you turn on course flying IFR?
RWY Heading to 400ft AGL then turn on course
What is the minimum climb gradient for IFR?
Climb 200ft/NM
What is Category A speeds?
91 knots and below
What is Category B speeds?
91 - 120 knots
How to we get specific approach speed for an aircraft
Vso x 1.3
When is circling minima set?
When Final approach course is is different than 30 degrees.
Give an example of a holding clearance
Sioux 76, hold 30 DME Southeast of the Grand Forks VOR on the 145 degree radial, 4NM legs, EFC at 1500z
What is the initial segment
Provides a method of aligning the aircraft with the approach course
What is the intermediate segment
Positions the a/c for final descent to the airport
What is the purpose of the final segment
Descend to a point where you can land safely if required visual references are available
What is the purpose of the missed segment
To navigate to a point where another approach can be attempted, continue to another airport, or hold.
What are some examples of runway environment?
Approaching lighting system - red terminating bars runway threshold threshold markings threshold lights runway end identifier lights visual glideslope indicator touchdown zone and touchdown zone markings touchdown zone lights runway markings runway lights
What if you can just see the ALS? What can you do?
If you can see the white approach light system and nothing else, you can descend down to 100’ above touchdown zone elevation
What is a TAA?
Terminal Arrival Area
What is the purpose of a TAA?
TAA are published portions of the approach and allow aircraft to transition from the enroute structure direct to the nearest IAF
When flying the archer, can we file an airport with only GPS approaches as an alternate?
No
What is a MSA?
Minimum Safe Altitude, provides 1000’ clearance for emergency use
When do we need to file an alternate ?
1-2-3 Rule
forecast 1 hour before or after our ETA
2000’ ceilings
3 SM viz
What is the standard IFR fuel reserves?
W/O alternate: Fuel to fly to destination + 45 minute reserve at cruising speed
W/ alternate: Fuel to fly to destination + alternate + 45 minute reserve at cruising speed
What are the standard alternate minumums?
NP: 800’ + 2 SM
P: 600’ + 2 SM
